Remodulin

In addition to Flolan, a drug called Remodulin (also known as UT-15) has been developed for the treatment of Pulmonary Hypertension (PH). Remodulin is a synthetic, stable form of prostacyclin, a naturally occurring substance in the human body. Currently, Remodulin is in Phase III FDA trials for the treatment of advanced PH.

Unlike Flolan, Remodulin does not require constant infusion; Flolan's effects last fro two to three minutes, while Remodulin continues to work for up to six hours. The increased life of the drug in the body means that Remodulin can be administered under the skin rather than directly into the bloodstream. Users of Remodulin rely on a pager-sized MiniMed microinfusion device that delivers the drug through subcutaneous infusion. Remodulin therefore carries a lower risk of sepsis infection and related hospitalization as compared to the direct IV line needed for Flolan.

Remodulin side effects are very similar to those reported by users of Flolan: jaw pain, headaches, nausea, diarrhea, flushing and localized pain at the Remodulin delivery site under the skin. The pain has been reported as slight irritation to severe.

The reports on Remodulin are encouraging: patients experience improvement in their condition including a decrease in fatigue. Users of Remodulin also report decreased shortness of breath, decreased pulmonary artery pressures as well as an overall improvement in their quality of life.

Remodulin users whose PH is the result of the use of diet drugs may be owed compensation for the cost of Remodulin and any other medical treatments/care. Remodulin is expected to be fairly expensive (Flolan currently costs upwards of $100,000 per year). If you or someone you love is taking Remodulin because of PH caused by a diet drug or supplement such as Fen Phen, you should contact an attorney to learn about your legal options.
