Treating PPH

Unfortunately, no cure exists yet for PPH. Patient survival can vary but is typically no longer than a few years. Effective treatment can allow a PPH victim to survive more than 10 years after diagnosis. Several treatments and drug programs exist that can extend the life of those who suffer from PPH.

  • Calcium Channel Blocking Drugs: Improves the heart's ability to pump blood with supplemental oxygen.
  • Anticoagulants: Lowers the blood's tendency to clot in the lungs and therefore allows the blood to flow more freely.
  • Diuretics: Reduces the amount of fluid and water in the body and reduces the workload of the heart.
  • Vasodilators: Stimulates and dilates the blood vessels in the lungs and reduces the blood pressure in them. Allows the blood vessels to perform their function better.
  • A Lung and heart transplant operation is also an option.

Only a physician can decide which treatment(s) is most appropriate on a case-by-case basis. Factors that may affect which treatment will be most effective include:

  • Overall health and medical history
  • Severity and progression of PPH
  • Ability to undergo treatments, procedures, medications, etc.
  • Progression and expectations of disease.

Recommended Lifestyle Changes

  • Exercise within bounds
  • Do not get pregnant
  • Do not take diet drugs
  • Do not smoke
  • Maintain positive state of mind
