Female PPH patients may be more likely to suffer certain injury after lung transplant
According to a new study from the University of Pennsylvania, women who undergo lung transplants are more likely than men to experience a certain type of injury afterwards.
The senior researcher of the study, Catherine Kuntz, MD, said there are a number of reasons that women could be at an increased risk, including hormone or immune system differences. Roughly 1,100 lung transplant procedures were performed in the United States last year, and more than 3,600 lung transplant candidates are currently on the waiting list.
The need for a lung transplant can be in response to a number of diseases, including primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH), as well as cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pulmonary fibrosis. Usually a lung transplant is considered a last resort option when the disease has reached advanced stages.
The researchers pulled record on nearly 7,500 adult lung transplant procedures performed in the United States between 1994 and 2002. Ten percent of the transplant recipients experienced an injury called primary graft dysfunction - which is described as acute severe lung injury taking place within 72 hours of surgery.
Of the patients, researchers found that women who received a lung from either a male or female donor were nearly 60 percent more likely to experience primary graft dysfunction compared to male transplant recipients. Researchers said primary graft dysfunction is evident between the time the lungs are removed from the donor and when they are transplanted to the recipient.
Researchers want to learn why the increased risk among women is present by investigating further.
