New study finds no association between herpesvirus and pulmonary hypertension

Investigators in Japan found no association between herpesvirus infection and a potentially life-threatening form of high blood pressure, according to a report in the March 1 issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases.

The latest study contradicts a much-publicized 2003 article published in The New England Journal of Medicine. Researchers reported they were unable to detect human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) in the lungs of 22 patients with primary or other forms of pulmonary hypertension.

Primary pulmonary hypertension and infection with HHV-8 are uncommon, according to the study authors. The investigators said that primary pulmonary hypertension is characterized in part by vascular lesions in the lung and can lead to heart failure. While some cases are associated with genetic susceptibility, the investigators said the pathogenesis of most cases is unknown.

Investigators concluded based on their data that human herpesvirus 8 infection is not associated with Japanese cases of primary pulmonary hypertension. The 2003 study identified evidence of HHV-8 in 10 of 16 samples from U.S. patients with primary pulmonary hypertension.

Researchers acknowledged earlier research was not consistent with their findings but that there are possible explanations for the differences, including differing pathogenesis of primary pulmonary hypertension in Japan than in the U.S. The lead researcher of the Japanese study said, “we hope that our results provide scientists with another perspective on the potential causes of primary pulmonary hypertension.”
