Determining a PPH diagnosis can take years

Primary pulmonary hypertension, or PPH, causes the blood vessels that supply the lungs to constrict, causing shortness of breath and an enlarged heart. People suffering from PPH are often diagnosed with other illnesses, but will typically complain of fatigue and shortness of breath.

Most people are not aware of the disease, which is part of the problem with getting a correct diagnosis. Since the symptoms can so easily be attributed to other conditions, many patients can become frustrated when the symptoms persist, confused with other things.

PPH causes are unknown, but according to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association, there are about 200,000 cases in the U.S. This estimate is believed greatly underestimated in reality, due to misdiagnoses and underreporting. Since there is also no cure associated to PPH, the prognosis by the time a proper diagnosis is made can be devastating.

Combined with the fact that few people have even heard of PPH, most patients do not look physically ill, though the disease is progressive. When patients are not rightly diagnosed with PPH but are actually very ill from the disease, it can be very difficult for patients to manage and to be understood by others.

The goal of treating PPH is to control symptoms. Depending on the individual, response to primary pulmonary hypertension treatment methods will vary. The entrance of new drugs on the market for PPH have been able to prolong life expectancy in patients, but researchers hope to find a cure and better ways of managing the disease in the future.

With more accurate and early diagnoses, PPH patients can lead more enjoyable lives.
